Financial Aid - Exit Counseling for Student Loans

What Is Exit Counseling?

When you as the student take out student loans you must complete entrance counseling so you are educated on this expense and the details of assuming the loan. Exit counseling is very similar to entrance counseling in that it is designed to educate you on your future with your loans. However, it is not only geared toward the specifics of repayment, but also toward additional information you will now need to aid you into the future. Exit Counseling is handled through the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), the database system utilized by the federal government to track all financial aid information for all students. You the student can access exit counseling by going to www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/SaEcWelcome.do and choosing the "START" button for loan exit counseling. You will need to provide your information as it asks and proceed through the process of completing the exit counseling. Once you are finished you will receive an Exit Counseling Certificate. Print this (if you can) as your confirmation that you have completed this vital step in the student loan process.

Exit Counseling if Dropping below Half-Time
or Withdrawing from School

To maintain eligibility for Direct Student Loans you the student must be enrolled at least half-time (which is two classes currently). If for some reason you fail to enroll at least half-time you will need to complete exit counseling if you have received any student loans during your course of study at OMW. It is important to note that YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR ANY AMOUNT OF STUDENT LOANS IF YOU ARE NOT ENROLLED AT LEAST HALF-TIME. You will want to access the exit counseling at www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA. You will click on "Exit Counseling" then click on the "START" link for Loan Exit Counseling. You will need to provide your personal information and log into your account. Once logged in, you will be given the option to complete your exit counseling. You will need approximately 45–60 minutes to complete this component. Once you are finished you will be given a Completion Certificate. If you can, please print this to keep with your records.
